Effective Communication

Communicate with clarity, compassion, and impact.

Effective communication background

Leading through communication

I believe the most essential skill for successful leadership is the ability to communicate — with yourself and with others — in ways that build connection, understanding, and trust.

When we communicate effectively, we not only get better results, we strengthen relationships, reduce reactivity, and create cultures where people feel seen and valued.

The power of Nonviolent Communication

Developed by Marshall Rosenberg, Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is the most powerful communication framework I’ve encountered in more than 30 years of leadership.

NVC transforms how individuals and teams relate to themselves and each other — how they give feedback, navigate conflict, and make decisions. The result is a workplace that is both more impactful and humane.

Why I teach NVC

I first learned NVC over twenty years ago while serving as a CEO. Since then, it has become the single most effective tool in my professional and personal life — helping me navigate challenges with greater grace, courage, and self-awareness.

Today, I bring this practice to my coaching clients and to leadership teams who want to strengthen connection and collaboration through skillful communication.

FAQ

Find the answers to the most frequently asked questions about my work. If your question isn't listed, please feel free to contact me directly.

How do we know if we're a good fit?

We begin with a relaxed, complimentary conversation about your goals and challenges. I’ll share my approach, and we’ll do a short coaching session so you can experience what working together feels like. There’s no pressure—if it’s a good fit, you’ll know.

Who do you typically work with?

I work primarily with senior leaders in the fields of climate change and progressive politics.

What challenges do clients typically bring to a coaching session?

Clients often come to coaching feeling stretched, overloaded, or stuck—despite being deeply committed to meaningful work. Common themes include navigating high-stakes leadership decisions, managing stress and burnout, communicating more effectively, leading through complexity and change, and finding greater clarity, ease, and alignment in how they lead and live.

Is everything we discuss confidential?

Everything we discuss is confidential. When coaching is sponsored by your organization, we’ll jointly develop a Coaching Priority Plan to share with your supervisor or board, and you’ll provide a short closing report summarizing outcomes. The content of our sessions remains private.
